The Celtic Cross is the most recognized tarot spread in the world. Ten cards are laid out in a cross-and-staff pattern, each position answering a different question about your situation. Where the three-card reading sketches a timeline and the five-card reading adds context, the Celtic Cross builds a complete picture: what surrounds you now, what crosses you, what came before, what is about to arrive, and how it all resolves.

What Each Position Means

  1. Primary Disposition — the mood and overall atmosphere of the situation. It sets the tone for everything that follows and either reinforces or softens the meaning of the other nine cards.
  2. Opposing Forces — the forces working against the situation, for good or ill. This card often points to things the reader hasn't noticed yet but which carry more weight than they appear to.
  3. Distant Past — actions from long ago that still ripple into the present, similar to karma. Old choices ask to be acknowledged before the situation can move forward.
  4. Recent Events — the immediate past and the atmosphere it leaves behind. Recent events or thoughts may be accumulating good or bad karma right now; the direction of things is often revealed here.
  5. Distant Future — something months or even years ahead. It won't arrive today, but hints will appear along the way for those who stay alert. Readiness shapes the final result.
  6. Immediate Future — a likely but not guaranteed event in the near term. Personal effort can still tilt things; this card calls for thoughtful planning, not resignation.
  7. Fears — hidden anxieties and negative feelings about the situation, often unconscious or unacknowledged. Naming them honestly is what allows them to be worked through.
  8. Influences — the effect of family, friends, or nearby events that may shape what happens soon. Even distant people can exert strong influence when the situation is new or important.
  9. Hopes — the querent's hopes and underlying motivation. Sometimes these are true aspirations, sometimes they are illusions surfacing for the first time — either way, they strongly color the near future.
  10. Outcome — the indicator of the overall result. It summarizes all ten cards and sometimes contradicts them when many strong themes are at play. Deeper meanings often ask for the reading to be revisited later.
