THE HOUSES AND MARRIAGE

Just as each planet and each sign can be read from the point of view of its influence on marriage, so too can each cosmic house be studied in relation to this aspect of life.

Every house has something to say concerning marriage, and it is important when one studies the exact influence of a planet's position in a house in aspect with some marriage significator. The following list will cover all the main rulerships of each house.

1

1st House

This has little bearing on marriage except that it rules marriages or divorces that are in some way dependent on previous ones — for example, the marriage of the petitioner and respondent in a divorce.

It also refers to those cases where a husband and wife who have already obtained a divorce decide to remarry.

2

2nd House

This rules inheritances and legacies received from the marriage partner, as well as the loss of money and the partner's debts. In Indian Astrology it holds some rulership over the family.

3

3rd House

The distant journeys of the partner, sea voyages, wanderings, as well as their religious or philosophical ideas, dreams, publications, and all things which directly relate to the natural rulerships of this house. It also rules religious differences that cause disharmony, and the lengthy and complex proceedings for divorce.

4

4th House

One of the parents of the individual or of their partner. The honors, public standing, and external ambitions of the partner. The celebrations that follow the marriage. The nature and circumstances of the period during which a divorce is obtained.

5

5th House

Marital fidelity and love affairs outside of marriage. The pleasures of the individual. Those people who help bring about the marriage or assist in obtaining a divorce. The partner's friends and their hopes or desires.

According to Indian Astrology, this house also rules the enjoyment of wealth acquired through women.

6

6th House

The secret enemies of the partner, imprisonments, sorrows and trials, chronic illnesses, injuries, and large animals — all those things that arise from this house's position as the 12th from the 7th. It also indicates things likely to follow a divorce. In a male horoscope it indicates the wife's confinement and maternity. This house holds particular importance in cases where there are shared mystical interests.

7

7th House

This house is the most directly connected with marriage.

8

8th House

The partner's money and movable possessions. The establishment of the wife through marriage. Alimony and other things gained through divorce. According to Indian Astrology, this house indicates the longevity of the marriage partner.

9

9th House

The partner's short journeys, automobiles, correspondence, publications, and other matters of the 3rd house. It also rules in-laws, honeymoons, the way the partner speaks, their talkativeness, etc., documents connected with divorce, and the text of the divorce decree.

10

10th House

One of the parents of the individual as well as of their partner. The spouse's inheritance, property, residence, and place of birth or the environment of birth.

11

11th House

The children of the partner, schooling, entertainments, love affairs, speculation, and other natural rulerships of the 5th house as they apply to the spouse. Also the opinions of the individual's friends regarding the marriage, the effect of the marriage on existing friendships, and pleasant experiences that are owed to the marriage.

12

12th House

The illnesses of the partner, food, favorite domestic animals, servants, employees. It also rules conditions that may impede the harmony of married life. According to Indian Astrology, it rules adultery and the absence of normal conjugal relations.

The application of these rulerships can determine many details regarding the marriage partner and the course of married life, as we shall see when the methods of determination are explained.

The Importance of the 7th House

It has already been stated that the rulership of the 7th house is primary over marriage, divorce, and the husband or wife. This is indeed one of the rulerships created by position in the horoscope.

It is the house that either balances the horoscope along the horizon or opposes it. Consequently, it is either complementary or antagonistic depending on how one looks at it.

From the complementary viewpoint it rules those people with whom one is closely associated on equal terms. In this sense it rules the spouse as well as the business partner. From the antagonistic viewpoint it rules those people against whom one struggles. In this sense it rules open enemies, professional and personal rivals and opponents, and the legal or other actions taken by them or against them.

The primary general purpose of polarity is to bring about the exchange and alternation of the positive and negative aspects of any influence, in such a way that an influence which naturally gives love for something may equally inspire hatred for that very same thing.

The aspect of marriage that falls under the 7th house is more companionate than emotional. The 7th house will describe the marriage partner, the fortune of the marriage, and the harmony or discord of the relationship, but it will always deal with the more superficial aspect of marriage and its practical management — as befits an angular house — rather than with the inner feelings that form the foundation of marriage.

Carter has maintained that the 7th house, although it rules married life, relates particularly to the middle period of marriage. The period of romance and the early years of marriage comes under the rulership of the 5th house, while the final period, in which friendship replaces romantic passion, comes under the rulership of the 11th house. The middle and principal period of marriage is that in which active companionship in the affairs of life is created.

One may conclude from this definition that the true significance of a severely afflicted 7th house is that the marriage will prove a failure, just as any business partnership would be. To say that Mars in the 7th house will upset marriage on account of conjugal quarrels is not exactly correct. The cause should be sought elsewhere — either among the emotional significators or in the synthesis of the two horoscopes. This should be borne in mind when reading the following notes on the general influence of each planet in the 7th house.

EFFECTS OF THE PLANETS IN THE 7th HOUSE

A planet located in the 7th house must always be taken as the chief external significator of marriage and of the marriage partner. The word "external" is used because the influence of any planet in any house does not represent all the responsibilities of the house.

The internal and final influence must be sought in the ruler of the house — or rather in that planet which rules it, or rules the signs occupied by the planet that is in the house.

If Jupiter occupies the 7th house in the sign Capricorn, its immediate influence will be that of Jupiter in the house. The general tendency of Astrology is to attribute the responsibilities and events to the house ruler.

A planet in a sign ruled by another planet is exactly like a person who is in another person's home. That person has limited freedom of action and can naturally express their character, but is fundamentally subject to the rules of the host. Many errors can be avoided if we take this rule into account.

With Jupiter in a good aspect in the 7th house in Capricorn, one might predict favorable marriage conditions, with a slight reservation perhaps on account of Jupiter's debility in this sign. This might be perfectly correct for the early days of the marriage and for the general picture presented to the world. But if Saturn, Jupiter's dispositor, were afflicted, the marriage conditions would gradually worsen until they corresponded more to Saturn than to Jupiter.

The Sun

The type of partner indicated by this position is independent, proud, ambitious, generous, honest, and law-abiding — unless the Sun happens to be afflicted, in which case they will be arrogant, tyrannical, selfish, and extravagant.

This may indicate a partner of high social standing — it usually signifies a partner who is superior to the individual. Professional or social advancement may result from the marriage. Generally, worldly progress will be considerably influenced — for better or worse — by the partner.

Marriage tends to be delayed until middle age.

When the Sun is afflicted in the 7th house, it is necessary for one partner to yield, otherwise inner quarrels develop. From the viewpoint of the outside world, marital differences will usually be well concealed. In public, the couple will conduct themselves toward each other with mutual formal and elaborate courtesy.

The affliction will also bring early and severe opposition to the marriage, usually from a parent with ambitions or financial authority, and may be the cause of the destruction of a career.

According to Alan Leo, the position of the Sun holds less significance in a female horoscope than in a male one.

The Sun is not favorably placed when in this house. Its fiery nature and great individuality do not create the prerequisites for an ideal marriage, to an even greater extent than is the case with Mars and Uranus.

Consequently this position is vulnerable to even weak afflictions and requires good aspects of a gentler nature to improve matters. A favorable aspect from the Moon, Venus, or Neptune is clearly beneficial, but in the case of Mars, Saturn, and Uranus — and to a lesser extent Jupiter as well — it is better to have no aspect at all, because those planets are assertive even under good aspects, while Jupiter tends to increase arrogance and extravagance.

The Moon

The Moon's position in the 7th house indicates a generous-hearted but rather moody partner.

In a female horoscope it creates a romantic marriage, and indicates a husband who is sensitive, whose feelings are easily led astray.

In a male horoscope, this position is not as a rule the only significator of the wife — the planet to which the Moon applies, or the planet with which it is in close strong aspect, must also be taken into consideration.

If the Moon receives good aspects, the wife will be of an emotional and gentle temperament. If the Moon is afflicted, the wife will be greedy, soft, grasping, ill-tempered, sickly, and slovenly.

This position of the Moon is not favorable because it creates a strong tendency toward fluctuations and changes in married life. In some cases this may be reflected in the partner's profession — for example in the case of a woman who marries a sailor, commercial traveler, or advertising agent. In such cases some of the partner's changeability may be channeled toward legitimate paths.

If the Moon is not seriously afflicted, the husband's failings do not usually break up the marriage. In contrast to the love of change and variety, the Moon's inner tendency is to cling to what it has.

Maintaining two separate situations simultaneously occurs with this position, particularly if the Moon happens to be in a mutable sign or in strong aspect with planets in mutable signs.

As a rule, the Moon in the 7th house, even if well aspected, indicates a partner who usually attaches great importance to sharing ideas and feelings together, and tends to insist on agreement. Under affliction, this can turn into quarreling and constant insistence on the same subject until some form of agreement is given for the sake of peace and quiet.

Severe afflictions from malefic planets to the Moon in this house, especially when no support is given by Jupiter or Venus, can bring about the death of the partner. This, however, cannot prevent a second marriage.

Mercury

Mercury in the 7th house represents a clever, versatile, sharp-minded, critical, and intelligent but somewhat unreliable partner — vain if a woman, prone to flirting if a man.

If afflicted, it indicates incessant chatter, intellectual or physical harshness, a partner who may range from a liar to a forger or thief, depending on the strength and nature of the afflictions.

Sometimes, by virtue of the law of polarity, an afflicted Mercury in the 7th house signifies a partner of extreme stupidity. The intellectual affliction in such cases can be rather complex, especially if Neptune, Uranus, and possibly Pluto are involved in the adverse aspects.

An individual who has Mercury in the 7th house takes a great interest in marriage and has definite views and theories about conjugal relations.

The husband or wife is usually younger than the individual. They may be a cousin, a distant relative, a school friend, one of a pair of twins, or a member of a large family.
