♈ 1. Aries

Aries is a reckless, impulsive, and headstrong sign, spontaneous in love affairs and marriage as in everything else. It is passionate and impetuous. There is, however, a measure of idealism in it as well. Sexual pleasure is more a matter of sudden impulse than deliberate pursuit.

It is a positive type and does not harmonize well with an equally positive partner. It tends to seek a partner of weaker character whom it can dominate with its masculine qualities and protect.

A man with Aries rising is attracted by beauty and by an apparent lack of ability. He needs a wife who will admire him and acknowledge his courage and competence when he asks it.

Naturally, Aries is better suited to a man than to a woman. The Aries woman is very domineering — something of a whirlwind in the home. She is capable, generous, forceful in opinion, difficult, and "imperious" when offended.

The nature of Aries is intense, capable of sudden violence and great jealousy. With appropriate afflictions, particularly from Mars or Uranus, a sadistic tendency can easily develop. In itself it is such a straightforward, simple, and primitive sign that it does not willingly mix with perversion.

It fights for leadership, whether man or woman. If the partner does not like being directed, constant friction will arise.

♉ 2. Taurus

Taurus has a very powerful sexual nature, primarily physical, but is by no means an unstable sign. The Taurus man is often sensual (licentious). This can frequently lead him into excesses.

The tendencies toward sexual pleasures are matched by equally strong tendencies toward over-eating, and arise for the most part from entirely animal instincts rather than from a search for the ideal in love, for variety, or from a desire for new experiences — things encountered in many of the other signs.

At heart, Taurus is faithful, kind, easily satisfied, and patient.

Neither the man nor the woman with Taurus rising can be driven by others, though either can be led very easily by affection. Taurus is a quiet sign.

Financial matters are usually extensively involved in Taurus marriages, arising from the fact that Taurus is the natural sign of money. This sometimes leads to marriages for money, but this is not always the case. By the law of polarity, exactly the opposite may occur, and the marriage may be one in which the lack of money creates critical situations.

A notable feature of Taurus in matters of sex and marriage is a natural calming power which makes the Taurus individual an excellent partner for one whose nervous system is disturbed.

Taurus and Gemini harmonize reasonably well together. Taurus supplies the stability, balance, and calm that the Gemini individual needs. On the intellectual level there may be friction: the slow mind of Taurus cannot keep pace with the brilliance and speed of the Gemini intellect.

♊ 3. Gemini

The Gemini mentality is purely intellectual. Interests in sex are entirely secondary when the sign is examined on its own, though other positions in the horoscope can bring sexual interests to the fore.

Gemini is essentially a cool sign, without deep feeling. It is a kind of living question mark. It always wants to know the reason for everything. It constantly analyzes its own and other people's thoughts, words, actions, and reactions. Psychological analysis is a Gemini habit, usually accompanied by an excessive but entirely involuntary and unconscious cruelty.

It wants to "watch the wheels turn" and is completely indifferent to the effect of the process on its subject.

The natural behavior of Gemini in sexual matters is not only experimental but also very cold, calculating, and selfish. It is generally considered an unstable and changeable sign, but in reality the instability does not arise from wandering feelings of love but from its desire to achieve its theoretical ideals.

It is difficult for most people to understand Gemini because it is far more logical than the other signs. Its analytical nature creates a tendency to grasp what is implied. Consequently it imagines that other people mean far more than they say.

The spouse of a Gemini individual must never be intellectually dull or slow in thought if the happiness of the marriage is to be maintained. Under affliction, Gemini shows criminal tendencies. Natives of the sign easily become forgers, thieves, and "confidence men" where quick minds and nimble, dexterous fingers are essential elements of success.

Bigamy also aligns with the Gemini nature. The duality of the sign is generally apparent in sexual matters.

♋ 4. Cancer

Cancer is excessively imaginative and emotional. Its sexual nature is romantic, emotional, protective, and very maternal. It is a changeable sign. It is certainly subject to sudden mood swings but has great tenacity and fidelity in its feelings of love and affection.

There are two characteristics of great importance: one is the fear of ridicule, and the other is the hatred of criticism. Both, especially the second, deeply affect married life.

Cancer in its best form has a "domestic" nature, a love of home and its possessions, a strong maternal love, and a desire to care for and protect others. It sacrifices itself and asks little in return for the love it gives.

Unfortunately, the best type of Cancer, like that of any other sign, is encountered very rarely, while the lower (undeveloped) type is far more common in daily life. In this case we find a distortion of Cancer's virtues: its domestic nature degenerates into slovenliness, and its love of home turns into greed and an acquisitive tendency.

The only way to get on well with an undeveloped or afflicted Cancer is to praise and flatter it at every possible opportunity. Under no circumstances should one say anything intended to rebuke or criticize it.

Mercury and the signs of Mercury produce shrews and quarrelsome types, but Cancer produces the true chronic grumbler. Even after a dispute has ended, Cancer usually revives and rakes it up again. Bad temper is one of Cancer's chief weapons of attack; the others are outbursts, tears, and grumbling.

In cases of an afflicted Cancer, the temper is malicious and spiteful, especially when Mars occupies the sign, or when the Moon is in Aries or Scorpio.

♌ 5. Leo

Leo is an intensely loyal, generous, and magnanimous sign, but not — as a rule — a fortunate one in marriage. This may be due to affection lavished on unworthy persons, to reckless and impulsive behavior in love, and to an almost unbounded faith in human nature.

Leo has a deep love for children, who often disappoint it, or whom it loses through death, or from whom it otherwise suffers great sorrow.

Like all the fire signs, Leo is an idealist and places those it loves upon a pedestal. This leads to disappointments, disillusionment, broken engagements, and unhappy marriages.

It has been observed that the 27th degree appears to be particularly unfortunate in marriage, and to a lesser extent this degree and those immediately adjacent to it seem to exert the same influence in the case of the other fixed signs.

In sexual matters, Leo tends to adopt a protective role and likes to be examined and admired. In practical terms, Leo women are good managers and excellent hostesses.

Extravagance is one of its faults, sometimes arising from lavish generosity and at other times from love of display and show. In their youth, Leo men are womanizers. Leo women seek admiration from whoever offers it. The sign is not in reality unstable but is capable of great loyalty and devotion once its feelings are fully awakened.

♍ 6. Virgo

Virgo is the natural sign of virginity, and consequently does not in reality favor marriage at all. The Virgo individual is usually self-sufficient to a greater or lesser degree and can generally adapt itself quite comfortably to a celibate life.

The sign is very discriminating and not at all easily satisfied. It is fastidious, dislikes being touched, has a deep-rooted fear of contamination, and all these characteristics play a significant role in the sexual nature of Virgo individuals.

In women, Virgo sometimes creates a form of homosexuality. This is more unusual in the case of men.

In marriage, Virgo is obedient and can be far more affectionate than it appears on the surface, because the sign's excessive timidity prevents any outward display of affection.

Elegance and cleanliness are usually strong characteristics of Virgo, and this is not limited only to women of the sign. This tendency shows in the way they dress, as well as in the care lavished on the home and possessions.

However, exceptions to this general rule are not uncommon. One may encounter Virgo individuals who seem entirely careless and untidy. The cause should generally be sought elsewhere in the horoscope, but even in pronounced cases of apparent neglect, the love of order and method is still at work in some specific area. Virgo rarely praises anything and very often grumbles and criticizes. This, however, means nothing — it is simply a matter of habit rather than an expression of genuine disapproval.

The general competence of the sign leads the Virgo individual to believe that no one else can do anything as well, as elegantly, or as methodically as themselves, and they are therefore reluctant to delegate work to others. If forced to do so, they insist on intervening with detailed instructions so that the correct methods are used.

Under affliction, Virgo produces sharp critics and turns women into shrews and quarrelsome individuals.

♎ 7. Libra

Although Libra is the sign of marriage, even when strongly placed in a horoscope this does not mean that marriage will occur. Libra has an intense desire for sympathy, love, understanding, and companionship. But it is an excessively idealistic sign, difficult to satisfy.

Fundamentally, Libra has little interest in others. This characteristic is found in both men and women of the sign. Women are romantic, tending to be "in love with love itself" more than with any other person apart from themselves. Both women and men seek admiration and flattery.

It is not correct to say, as most books do, that Libra is an affectionate sign. In reality Libra has an affectionate manner — but this is not the same thing. Beneath that manner lies a large dose of egotism and frequent shallowness.

There is no argument about the personal charm of Libra, which is never entirely absent even in the most common representatives of the sign. Sometimes this charm is unconscious.

Libra women make ideal hostesses. Though quite capable, the Libra woman dislikes work, especially if it involves getting her hands dirty, and prefers to lounge on a pile of cushions and press a button.

The sexual aspect of marriage holds little importance for Libra women. It is indeed doubtful whether it holds greater importance for Libra men, though this is sometimes the case.

Young Libra girls and women are usually surrounded by many admirers. In reality they are seeking admiration. As a result, Libra women play one admirer against another until they lose them all, and are left to decide whether to remain unmarried or to rush into marriage with the first available person. This small tragedy is played out by the majority of Libra women and explains why their marriages are generally not happy ones.

In other cases, the partner may be a wealthy man who needs someone to adorn his home and impress his important business acquaintances. In both cases the marriage is one of convenience. All affection comes from one side only. Libra men are not as inclined to make the best marriage either. They find it exceedingly difficult to resist feminine wiles and flattery, and moreover are always seeking an unattainable ideal.

♏ 8. Scorpio

Scorpio is by far the most powerful of all signs. It is the sign of extremes. No other sign's individuals can rise to such great heights or sink to such unfathomable depths as those of Scorpio.

Sexually it is a very powerful sign. The Scorpio individual can endure prolonged and continuous excesses that would quickly exhaust the constitution of most other signs. Their capacity for self-restraint and self-control is as great as their desire for surrender to pleasure.

The Scorpio individual typically pursues the main opportunity, and often enters into a marriage that offers significant material advantages. The nature of Scorpio is intensely proud. In cases where marriage improves his social standing, the Scorpio man seeks affection and adventure away from home. He will never, however, allow such complications to disturb his domestic life, which he keeps apart from everything else.

Perhaps the main faults of Scorpio women are intense jealousy, pride, and a domineering nature. There is nothing of the "foolish inconsistency" in Scorpio women. They have strong characters, a fierce and sometimes unconventional sense of justice, and the capacity for very deep and lasting loves and hatreds.

As one might conclude from the extreme nature of the sign, marriage can be either very happy or quite the opposite.

A Scorpio individual who is seriously offended tends toward tragedy and crime, while their susceptibility to brooding, paroxysms of deep melancholy and depression, and persecution mania are quite common to a greater or lesser degree, according to the severity of the affliction.

♐ 9. Sagittarius

Sagittarius is a sincere, carefree sign with a friendly and attractive manner. Women value freedom very highly and will not tolerate any form of oppression or restraint.

With a more sexually inclined sign this could lead to free love and irregular unions, but Sagittarius is usually very orthodox and conventional. They care too much about what people say and do not deviate far from existing customs.

The desire for admiration makes Sagittarius prone to having numerous flirtations. As a rule, however, these flirtations are trivial and do not seriously interfere with married life.

Natives of this sign are usually poor liars but good detectives — they sense the truth by intuition behind any attempt to deceive them.

As marriage partners they are friendly rather than affectionate, extremely curious, full of well-meaning but rather tiresome advice. There is a large measure of idealism and enthusiasm in the sign. A strong intellectual outlook is evident, which sometimes leads to the choice of a marriage partner for apparently excellent reasons that may not prove sound. The worst possible partner for a Sagittarius is perhaps one with narrow and restricted views. A marriage of this kind degenerates into sarcasm, quarrels, and general unhappiness.

Since Sagittarius is not bound and restricted, marriage is generally reasonably satisfying.

♑ 10. Capricorn

Capricorn is not usually considered a strongly sexual sign, but there is no doubt that it can exhibit a very significant degree of mental lust. It is a restrained sign, easily subject to perversions, especially sadism and homosexuality.

In normal cases, ambitions greatly influence marital affairs. The native of the sign usually seeks some material benefit in marriage. At the same time there is a notable sensual awareness.

Men have a strong protective instinct. Women, though very capable of looking after themselves and their affairs, adopt an air of supplication and seek protection.

Capricorn individuals are born managers. They are not content with regulating only their own and their partner's life, but seek to direct the life of everyone they come into contact with.

Women make every effort to advance the careers of their husbands and relatives, and are remarkably successful at making something out of material from which no one would expect anything.

Under the most favorable conditions, this is not an affectionate sign, and it produces a partner or parent more of duty than of affection and love.

Capricorn individuals attach great importance to their rights. This behavior is not considered vindictive — it is rather a rigid insistence on the application of absolute justice that does not bend or soften under pity.

In married life, lapses on the part of either spouse are rarely forgiven. The Capricorn individual does not rush, and is more likely to make a mistake in the choice of partner through excessive caution than through carelessness or spontaneous love.

♒ 11. Aquarius

Aquarius is not particularly interested in sexual matters. It is a theoretical, philosophical type of sign, with great interest in life and humanity, deeply absorbed in philanthropic ideals, progressive political movements, and scientific topics dealing more with life than with behavior.

The nature of Aquarius does not fully favor happiness in marriage. Romantic involvements after marriage can also cause considerable complications.

♓ 12. Pisces

Pisces has been called "the dustbin of the zodiac." There is probably no other sign so capable of creating a state of sensitive irrationality as Pisces. At their best they are a source of sympathy, charity, philanthropy, and hospitality. As a rule they are kind, sympathetic, imaginative, and very sensitive. They are improvident, intuitive, receptive, possessed of mediumistic abilities, lovers of peace, but neither very practical nor particularly capable.

The sign is impressionable and tends to be swept away by every emotion, having very little resistance to temptation. They are often carried away by emotional excitements that lead to intoxication and sensuality, and sometimes to the weaker and more negative forms of perversion. On the sexual side, Pisces tends toward erotic licence. The faults of the sign are based more on weakness and sensitivity than on any real corruption. Much depends on upbringing, environment, and the choice of friends and companions.
